The Guyana Amazon Warriors cricket team defeated rival team the Barbados Tridents earlier in the 2019 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season to extend their record unbeaten streak to 11 games, but the Tridents exacted revenge on the Warriors in the championship game.
Barbados scored a 171/6 to 144/9 victory over Guyana in the final game of the season this past October to secure their second-ever CPL championship. Guyana has now finished as the runner-up in five of the seven CPL finals and has yet to win a league championship since the league was founded in 2013. Nonetheless, the team has appeared in more finals than any of the other five CPL nations.
The following are eight of the players who played for the Warriors this past season:
1. Christopher Green
Born in Durban, South Africa, Christopher Green was captain of the Guyana Amazon Warriors for the 2018 CPL season. One of the league’s most economical spinners, Green bowled quite well in 2018; he allowed only 251 runs and conceded a scant economy of 6.3. He allowed 260 runs this past season and replicated his 6.3 economy figure. He was slightly less effective as a batter this past season, scoring 30 runs compared to 53 the year prior.
2. Shefrane Rutherford
Although he is only 21 years old, Shefrane Rutherford has established himself as a player to watch in the future. He broke through on the international scene in the 2018 Global T20 Canada, where he finished the tournament third in runs scored (230) and registered an unbeaten 134 off 66 balls in a match against the high-powered Vancouver Knights.
He expanded upon these achievements in his debut CPL season in 2018, scoring 171 runs and helping Guyana to reach the final for the fourth time in six years. He also plays for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
3. Shoaib Malik
One of the veterans of the Warriors team, Shoaib Malik is one of only five players to ever score more than 2,000 runs in T20 Internationals (T20I) competition. At one point, he even held the record for most T20I runs. The 37 year old served as captain of Pakistan’s entry in the 2007 World T20 and was part of the team that won the event in 2009.
He has played in the CPL since its inception, but has only played for Guyana the past two seasons; he spent the prior five seasons with the Barbados Tridents.
4. Imran Tahir
Although he is older than Malik, Imran Tahir has significantly less international experience—the 40 year old didn’t play in an international contest until he was 32. However, since then, Tahir has become one of the most accomplished players in the world; he has 61 T20I wickets, which is tied for the most among South African players, and his personal best figures of 5/24, recorded in a match against New Zealand, ranks as the third-best bowling figures in T20Is by a South African. The 2019 CPL season was his second with the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
5. Ben Laughlin
After a four-year CPL absence, Australian Ben Laughlin returned to the CPL in 2019 to play for the Guyana Amazon Warriors, allowing 151 runs and 7 wickets with an economy of 8.9. He last played in 2014 with the Antigua Hawksbills and has also played for three different IPL teams. The 37 year old is one of Australia’s top T20 bowlers and holds the record for most wickets (95) in the Big Bash League.
6. Nicholas Pooran
Nicholas Pooran has played in the CPL since its inception in 2013, at which time he was the youngest player in the league. Now 24, Pooran was expected to be Guyana’s marquee player in his debut season with the team in 2019—he fared quite well by scoring 168 runs, the third-most of his career. He has also played in the Bangladesh Premier League as well as international competitions like the World Cup and the U-19 World Cup.
7. Romario Shepherd
A native of Guyana, Romario Shepherd was selected by the Amazon Warriors in the CPL Draft, making his debut with the team in 2018. He only played three matches in 2018, but he appeared in nine this past season and scored 32 runs. As a bowler, he had 26.4 overs and 218 runs through eight innings and an economy of 8.2.
8. Keemo Paul
Keemo Paul garnered international attention during the U-19 World Cup in 2016, when he attempted a mankad that helped his team to win a game against Zimbabwe. His West Indies team eventually won the tournament with a 146/5 to 145 victory over India. The 21 year old has played three seasons in the CPL, all with Guyana, and scored a career-best 73 runs this past season as a batter.
